Realizing this dream is not a road full of roses and of course, it is not for everyone. However, if you prepare carefully and have the right strategy, this dream can completely come true.

A journey of a thousand starts with the first step. Today, let’s start learning about the mandatory requirements that can help you become a doctor in the US.

2. Complete USMLE Step 2 CK with excellent scores

Following USMLE Step 1, the Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) exam is an exam that evaluates the ability to apply clinical knowledge in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Previously, when the USMLE Step 1 exam was returned as a 3-digit score, Many IMGs, including Vietnamese doctors, will focus on achieving high scores in this exam to make their profile stand out and increase their chances of being accepted into residency.

However, up to now, after the Step 1 exam results have changed to pass/fail format, a high Step 2 CK score will be an important factor to help your profile stand out more. when applying to medical residency programs.

3. Participate in clinical internship courses in the US (USCEs)

Clinical internship in the US (USCE – U.S. Clinical Experience) is an opportunity for medical students and doctors graduating abroad to get acquainted with the medical system in the US, and learn how to work in a hospital environment and communicate with patients from local doctors here.

There are 3 main types of clinical internship, including: observership, externship, (for doctors who have graduated) and hands-on rotation (only for those who are still students in medical school, practice more on patients and are difficult to find).

USCE is one of the most important factors that determine your success on your path to becoming a doctor in the US. Even if you only have experience observing or practicing in a medical environment in the US, you will certainly still be more popular than doctors with no experience (hearing is not as good as seeing).

Because the risk to a residency program when accepting that doctor is very high, if you do not understand how to work in a hospital, how to use electronic medical records in the US, how to talk to colleagues, how a visit with a patient will take place… then mistakes and lawsuits are very likely to happen. This is something that residency programs are always shy about and avoid as much as possible.

In addition to the advantage when applying, if you perform well in USCE courses, you will also have more opportunities to receive quality letters of recommendation from doctors working in the US, which will make your application many times stronger.

4. Ask for letters of recommendation from American doctors (LORs)

As mentioned above, letters of recommendation (Letter of Recommendation – LOR) from doctors in the US are also one of the most important factors when applying to residency programs in the US.

Having enthusiastic letters of recommendation not only shows that you have recognition for your professional capacity and working attitude, but will also help your profile stand out and Create trust with the selection committee. Therefore, when you have them, you will have the opportunity to receive many interview invitations from residency programs.

To do so, you should build a good relationship with the instructing doctors during your internship to get quality letters of recommendation.

5. Participate in medical research

Usually, on average, IMGs will participate in 2-3 research projects and 3-6 publications (reports) when applying to a US medical residency. Publication can include reports in scientific journals, or simply an abstract or presentation…

Research experience, quality publications and articles published in major journals will help your profile make a strong impression in the eyes of the admission board. This not only proves your academic ability but also your serious working spirit and dedication to the profession.

If possible, learn about scientific research and participate in medical research projects early on, right from the time you are a student, to have the opportunity to approach and achieve success. These things early.

Start today, step by step complete the requirements and get closer to your goals every day.

Family Doctor in the U.S.

Years ago, when I sat down to write my application essay for the Bill Gates scholarship, I wrote about the dream of becoming a doctor who could help people across languages and cultures. That journey eventually led me to practice family medicine in the United States and to build The Phoenix Medical Academy — so students and immigrant families can find clearer guidance on studying medicine, residency, and life in America.
