What to do to prevent the risk of suicide?

I remember not long ago, all over Vietnamese social networks seemed to wake up from the suicide of a 10th grade boy, and a series of suicides that followed.

Myself, in addition to being a doctor, as a mother and sister, I could not help but feel sad when I witnessed the boy’s footage. Jumping down from the balcony right in front of her biological father’s eyes like that.

Without discussing who is right or wrong, the consequences of suicide are extremely pitiful!
This story also reminds me of a girl from college.

1. STORIES AROUND US

She is a beautiful 23-year-old girl, has outstanding achievements in both studying and volunteering, and seems to always be happy.

I myself, a girl who left her family to live and study in a big state, also received a lot of help from her. Also from those occasions, I had the opportunity to talk and interact more with her.

She was always the girl who seemed to have it all.

Then, one day I heard the news that her friend had committed suicide due to depression.

In my mind at that time there was only the feeling of shock, not being able to and not daring to believe that it was true. really!

Her?
Why?
For what?
Why could someone like her come to that decision?

2. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED FROM THOSE STORIES?

Her incident that day reminded me of a sentence I read when I was researching suicide:

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”

It means:

“ Live well witheach other, because everyone you meet is fighting a difficult battle.”

Indeed, each of our lives has difficulties, pressures, wounds and feelings that are not easy to share with others. ai.

As a doctor, I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be the person that patients trust to share their secret pain – which sometimes they cannot share with anyone, including family members.

And so, I always remind myself of this responsibility, so that I can act skillfully to help patients during this difficult period.

3. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO PREVENT THE RISK OF SUICIDE?

Preventing suicide is not an easy task at all, because this skill is not something we are naturally born with.

So what can we do to help them?

And besides:

  • What methods do we have to approach patients with psychological problems?
  • How do we know when to assess a person’s risk of suicide?
  • What are the interventions when detecting a patient at risk?
  • Who can intervene?
  • At what time and how is it appropriate to intervene?
  • …
