First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 (also known as First Aid) is considered the bible for USMLE Step 1.
This is a comprehensive source Excellent knowledge, with content packed into about 600 pages. However, because the amount of knowledge is extremely condensed, if you do not know how to use it properly, you will easily be “distracted”.
That’s why in today’s article, I will share my experience in using this book, so you can have a strategy to take advantage of it effectively, helping to save time and effort on your journey to becoming a doctor in the US. me.
1. When Should You Learn First Aid?
First Aid is like a giant summary document, providing all the necessary knowledge for the exam.
However, for those who are just starting to learn Step 1, or those with weak background knowledge, First Aid absolutely should not be the first study material. A huge amount of knowledge without detailed explanations will immediately make you feel overwhelmed and difficult to absorb.
Instead, before embarking on First Aid, you can use supporting documents and courses to strengthen your foundation first.
For example:
- Pathoma: Very good for pathology section.
- Board & Beyond: A series of easy-to-understand video lectures to help you gain background knowledge.
- High-Yield Concepts: The materials focus on important topics that are frequently asked on the exam.
Once you have acquired the background knowledge, you should start immediately with UWorld to get familiar with the questions and clearly identify which high-yield topics need to focus on, and which low-yield topics.
Next you can use First Aid to synthesize knowledge and review high-yield topics.
2. How to Study First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 Effectively
a. Learn In Order
FA has been designed and presented by experienced doctors in a very logical system. You should study in the order of the chapters in the book to easily grasp and connect knowledge.
However, if you find some parts difficult to understand or need to prioritize, you can completely change the order to suit your personal needs.
b. Take Note And Highlight
Previously, when studying Step 1, I often wrote notes, cut and pasted and highlighted directly on the book instead of copying it to another place. That’s why I bought 2 First Aid books right away, one healthy book to look up when needed, and one book full of notes, highlights, stickers…
This method has helped me a lot in absorbing knowledge and not wasting time taking notes out.
c. Look Up When You Don’t Understand
In such a book that summarizes knowledge with more than 600 pages, encountering parts you don’t understand is inevitable.
If you encounter such content during the learning process, don’t waste hours or days reading the entire supplementary material to try. find the answer.
Instead, you can look up right on ChatGPT, Google, UpToDate, PubMed… to understand that knowledge quickly.
3. How Long Should I Study First Aid?
First Aid is approximately 600 pages. If you focus on learning about 10-20 pages a day, you will finish it in 1-2 months.
However, learning that simple dry knowledge does not come with luck. The application will overload you and very quickly make you forget everything you just learned in 2 months.
Many times, after studying one book at a time, by the end of the book, you don’t even remember what you learned in the first part.
This will be a waste of time and make you doubt your abilities. body.
Instead, study First Aid in parallel with UWorld, chapter by chapter or specific topic. This will help you easily connect dry theoretical knowledge with practical application questions, thereby remembering better and reducing the feeling of overload.
