This week I took my two children to Disney World. What’s interesting is that part of the funding for this trip came from… my job as a doctor.
- Not a reward.
- Not corporate travel.
It’s a benefit called the Continuing Medical Education Fund – CME Fund (Continuing Medical Education Fund) that many doctors in the US enjoy every year. This is one of the benefits of being a doctor in America that are very valuable but few people talk about.
1. What is CME Fund? Operating mechanism of the Continuing Medical Education Fund in the US
To maintain their license to practice, doctors in the US are required to continuously update their knowledge and complete a certain number of professional training hours each year.
Therefore, many hospitals and health systems will give doctors a separate budget for learning and professional development. Depending on the workplace, this fund usually ranges around 3,000–4,000 USD per year, with some places even offering much higher compensation.
2. CME Fund’s payment list: From studying to travel expenses
Funds from this CME Fund can be used extremely flexibly by doctors for professional service categories including:
- Fees for participating in medical conferences.
- In-depth professional courses.
- Exam fees for practicing certificates.
- Books and specialized medical documents.
- Airplane transportation.
- Hotel reservation costs.
- Expenses directly related to attending the conference such as transportation, meals, etc.
Regarding the method of operation, doctors will usually pay these expenses themselves in advance, keep the full invoice and submit it to the hospital’s human resources department for reimbursement.
3. Actual benefits right from the residency stage (Resident)
What many people find surprising is that this special benefit is not at all just for attending physicians.
Ever since you were a resident, many postgraduate training programs have proactively provided CME funds to their students.
This means that even during the stressful learning period, young doctors are given solid financial support to attend conferences, learn new clinical skills, buy professional documents or confidently register for necessary certification exams without having to worry about the financial burden.
4. Humanistic thinking behind the American medical system and personal experience
I really like the strategic thinking behind this policy of theirs. The medical system in the US not only requires doctors to study, but they also create the best conditions for doctors to study.
Because the fact is that medicine changes and advances very quickly. What was considered a treatment protocol or standard a few years ago is sometimes no longer best practice today. If a doctor stops updating, the last person directly affected is the patient.
This year, I registered to attend a specialized medical conference in Orlando, Florida. Since I was flying to Orlando anyway, I decided to take my two children with me so the whole family could have a few more days to rest and explore Disney World.
- During the day, my mother focuses on going to school.
- Late in the afternoon, the whole family went out together.
For me, this trip to Orlando is not purely a dry scientific conference. It is also a very beautiful and warm memory for the family.
One side is the responsibilities of a medical career, the other side is quality time to rest and spend with the children. And sometimes, thanks to the practical benefits that work brings, those two sacred things can be completely reconciled and fulfilled in the same trip.
This is truly one of the things I feel extremely grateful for when working and practicing as a doctor in the US.
