Many people have shared with me that one of the reasons I pursued USMLE is that I can help many people by becoming a doctor without borders.

Doctors Without Borders – Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF – Médecins Sans Frontières (French), is an international non-profit organization, founded in 1971 in Paris.
Currently, MSF has approximately 63,000 members and volunteers in more than 70 countries globally.
1 - WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL POINTS OF MSF?
MSF operates independently in the field of human health care.
They provide practical, urgent and effective medical support, including people and supplies to areas affected by war, natural disasters, epidemics, and people without access to health care services.
By ignoring political and religious barriers, one of the organization’s highest principles is “PATIENTS FIRST”, providing high quality medical services, even food, clean water and other services to all those who need it.
With its enormous contributions to the world, in 1999, MSF was honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
2 - JOIN DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDER?
So how does Doctors Without Borders recruit?
MSF is divided into two areas: Medical Field & Non-medical Field.
In Medical Field, to become a doctor for MSF, you need to complete the medical training program at school (in the US you also need to complete the residency program) and have at least 2 years of practice as a real doctor. Some specific industries can join MSF immediately after the residency program.
In addition, to operate such a global health organization, in addition to clinicians, we also need nurses, epidemiologists, psychologists, pharmacists, laboratory staff…
In the Non-medical Field field, it is impossible not to mention logistics staff, operations staff, IT, electrical engineers, vehicle repairmen… Just like doctors, they need at least 2 years of experience in a similar position.
3 - WHAT QUALITIES ARE NECESSARY TO WORK AT MSF?
There are many elements required to become a Doctor Without Borders. However, flexibility and adaptability are two factors that are more important than anything else.
With the characteristics of the job, the constant change in position, working environment, as well as partners. serving, MSF needs employees who are not afraid of facing change.
You will likely face diseases you have never seen before, or disease outbreaks that you will have to act as a handler, or even obstacles regarding violence and war in the countries where you are working.
Not only that, you also have to be flexible enough in terms of expertise to adapt to the patient’s needs.
In the US, if you work at the primary care level like me, you will have Specialists to send patients to. But in poor and developing countries, especially in emergencies, it is impossible.
4 - WHERE WILL YOU WORK AND FOR HOW LONG?
True to the name Doctors Without Borders, when you register to join Doctors Without Borders, you cannot choose where you will work or which patients you will examine and treat.
Instead, the organization will divide the work based on patient needs and whether you have the necessary skills accordingly.
The commitment time to serve the organization is 9-12 months (except for the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and obstetricians, the commitment time is 2-3 months).
5 - WHY DO SO MANY DOCTORS WANT TO APPLY FOR AMERICAN MEDICAL REsidency TO FOLLOW THIS PATH?
Benefits when registering for Doctors Without Borders

For many doctors, this is their passion and the big dream of their entire lives. In terms of professionalism and personal development, your survival skills, as well as your language skills will also make great progress after training and working at MSF. Regarding basic issues such as air tickets, accommodation, VISA, transportation, MSF will fully support you.
