“There is no one at all” – Son Tung MTP’s controversial MV in 2022.

The other day I just got home from work and heard the news from a classmate of mine. I (grade 10) just passed away by suicide.

The first question in my mind is “Why is that?”

Maybe you are the same as me.

When you hear that a child in his prime, with a future and life ahead of him, decided to end his life like that, perhaps the first question you will ask is “Why is that?”

1. STORY FROM "THERE IS NO ONE AT ALL" MV.

This morning, when I woke up on Facebook, I read a lot of articles talking about Son Tung-MTP’s latest video “There’s no one at all.”

I went to Youtube and watched it right away.

And I want to share a few thoughts about the video hey.

The first thing I want to say is a message to Son Tung.

“ I thank Tung for bravely shining light into a dark and painful corner of society in the most artistic way possible.”

It is very easy for us to judge a child as “weird”, “rebellious”, “destructive”, “naughty” or “doing crazy things”, but who knows that behind the not-so-beautiful things we see is a lonely and painful soul, longing to be cared for and understood.

It is very easy for us to say “Don’t commit suicide” but few know that “There are pains in life that are worse than death.”

2. OUR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Saying so does not mean that I encourage acts of rebellion or endorse suicide.

And I also believe that the message Son Tung wants to send is not “drawing a path for the deer to run” or suggesting that children should “commit suicide.”

As a doctor and a mother, I completely agree that suicide is not the way to go. solve the problem. And I also understand the worry that if a young person who is struggling sees another person committing suicide, they will be influenced and follow suit.

But the truth is that no happy person would want to commit suicide just because of watching a video with images of suicide.

And so, instead of forbidding our children from watching this video, we are parents, teachers, instructors, doctors, guide Please use this video as an opportunity to open conversations with your children.

Talk with an open mind, listen to understand, to connect with your children, because who knows, our own children are suffering silently, without anyone else know.

Our responsibility to society is to shine light into the dark corners of society, because if we DON’T TALK about them, they do not exist.

They still exist.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization in 2012, every 40 seconds in the world there is a a person commits suicideto find liberation. And this number is still increasing because of the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

On the contrary, we need to talk about them more. There needs to be frank and serious conversations about mental health and suicide.

So that children no longer feel “There’s no one at all.”

So that they do not look to suicide as the only solution.

So that we do not lose our most loved ones because of words that are worth saying but have not been said.

This morning I came across several statuses on Facebook about a newly released video by Son Tung- MTP titled “There is no one at all.”

I went to Youtube and watched it right away.
And I want to share some thoughts about this video.

The first thing I want to say is a message I want to send to Son Tung.
“Thank you for your courage. You’ve brought to light a painful issue of our society in the most artistic way possible.”

It is very easy for us to judge a child as “weird“, “rebellious“, “destructive“, “spoiled” or “doing crazy things“, but few know that behind those troublesome facades is a lonely and miserable soul, longing for love and understanding.

It is easy for us to say “Don’t commit suicide“, but few people know that “There is pain in life that is worse than death.”

That’s not to say I endorse acts of rebellion or endorse suicide. And I also believe that Son Tung’s intention with this video is not to suggest or encourage teenagers to commit suicide.

As a doctor and a mother, I completely agree that suicide is not the way to solve problems. I also understand the concern that if a person with depression sees another committing suicide, he/she may feel the urge to do that.

But the truth is — no happy person would want to commit suicide just because he/she watched a video with images of suicide.

And so, instead of banning our children from watching this video, we as parents, teachers, instructors, doctors, and mentors should use this video as an opportunity to have conversations with our children, students, mentees, and our patients.

Let’s come to this conversation with an open mind, an intention to listen to understand, to connect with them because maybe they are suffering, in silence.

Whether we are social media users, influencers, or celebrities, we all have a social responsibility to speak up about important social issues.

We may choose to ignore them or worse – avoid talking about them. But that does not mean they don’t exist.

They EXIST.

In fact, according to the World Health Organization report in 2012, a person dies from suicide every 40 seconds in the world. This number is even worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Therefore, we need to talk about them more.
There need to be open and serious conversations about mental health, about suicide.

So that no one would feel “There’s no one at all.”

So that no one will resort to suicide as the only solution.

So that we don’t lose our loved ones — because of what should have been said but not said.

Years ago, when I sat down to write my application essay for the Bill Gates scholarship, I wrote about the dream of becoming a doctor who could help people across languages and cultures. That journey eventually led me to practice family medicine in the United States and to build The Phoenix Medical Academy — so students and immigrant families can find clearer guidance on studying medicine, residency, and life in America.
